Understanding Email Headers

What are Email Headers?

Email headers contain metadata about the email including routing information, authentication results, sender details, and more. They're essential for troubleshooting delivery issues.

Authentication Results

The Authentication-Results header shows SPF, DKIM, and DMARC check results. "pass" means the check succeeded, "fail" means it failed.

Received Headers

Received headers show the path an email took from sender to recipient. They're added by each server that handles the email, with the most recent at the top.

How to View Email Headers

Gmail

  1. Open the email
  2. Click the three dots (⋮) menu
  3. Select "Show original"
  4. Copy all the headers

Outlook

  1. Open the email
  2. Go to File → Properties
  3. Find "Internet headers"
  4. Copy the header text
